Certainly, nobody will deny it, he says: it is difficult to write about a friend. That insistent debate between the question and the answer glimpsed in the rain, in the paintings of Bosch or Leonardo´s sfumato. What does travelling mean to a poet? One occasion more to ask and to question oneself. The Moon, perhaps, Amsterdam, the bottom of the Lagoon, in Venice. But also marble and decline, the penumbra of a house that after the rain shows a chaos that only threatens to grow. I miss my Bosch, nevertheless. It is that there is a personal wound. A question asked on the verge of a lethal temperature. Of course. So, it is not possible to write about a friend, about a poet. Because nobody knows himself and has to know himself. Especially the translations by Brian Cole are superb, ´The Great Chimney´ looses a little of the sympathetic tone in translation. ´This is my life..´ is despite the theme of a surrender to the capricious whims and cruel turns of life, the involuntary participation in it, greatly soothing. Soothing despite the disturbance of solitude in life. In ´The Great Chimney´ perhaps the thought is not lost, but the tone included some rude rhytm of English, and seems therefor less balanced. But the sentence ´we feel each grass blade´s breath´ is genial. The last poem, ´What is the measure´ I liked best, there´s nothing missing it seems, it is the circle fully round. There is an absolute middle found between the poet´s visionary mysticism and his meaningfull intention. I found great inspiration reading the last poem, and reading it more often, I cannot penetrate its misty reality, so densely is a poem´s true form found in this one! Hope to read more... Remko Caprio
